Vanessa Williams, who was crowned Miss America on September 17, 1983 as the first African-American to win the title, talks about why she participated in the pageant. Ms. Williams hoped the scholarship money from winning the title could help her pay for her year abroad in London. She feels now that being labeled as a "beauty queen," in fact, hindered her career.
