Russian Igor Kleynor shares his memories of the Miracle on Ice as a 13-year-old expecting the Soviet team to win and recalls his reaction to the Lake Placid game. Team USA beat the Soviet team in an unexpected upset on February 22, 1980 and went on to win the gold medal game against Finland just two days later. Nico Toemen, a linesman at the 1980 Olympics, shares his memories of the unforgettable hockey upset and remembers how a Soviet trick helped him onto the ice despite feeling sick. "I was flying," he recalls.  Toemen remembers the excitement of the game and how he and the other officials let the players play hockey.

Dan Brooks, son of the legendary hockey coach Herb Brooks, recalls what President Jimmy Carter said to his dad after they beat Finland in the gold medal game at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Two days before the U.S. Olympic hockey team unexpectedly defeated the Soviet team in a game now referred to as the Miracle on Ice.

Jamie Farr, a star of the TV show M*A*S*H, describes his experience sitting in the Soviet section and cheering for the American team. Farr compares the thrill of the victory in the arena with the feeling he had on V-E day and V-J day at the end of World War II. “The big Russian bear got tripped up,” Farr says.

In the days leading up to the Olympics, the U.S. and Soviet teams played one last exhibition. The Soviet team easily defeated the overwhelmed Americans, winning by a score of 10-3. The exhibition was played on February 9, 1980, and the Winter Olympics started February 13. The 10-3 result highlighted the overall excellence of the Soviet team, a squad that had defeated a team of NHL All-Stars and featured skaters who were older, bigger, and more skilled than their American counterparts.
