Olympic legend Eric Heiden, who won five speed-skating gold medals at the 1980 Olympics, remembers watching the U.S. play the Soviets in the Miracle on Ice game. “You just kept thinking, ‘Man, come on Jim Craig, do not make a mistake.’” Heiden noticed that the Soviet team played the last minute or so as if it had already given up. Heiden grew up playing hockey as well as skating and knew several of the players on the 1980 team.
