On Wednesday, 5 October 2011 the container ship Rena ran aground on the Astrolabe Reef, subsequently spilling hazardous materials and oil into the water.

Julia Graham discusses how wildlife at Mount Maunganui is recovering from the Rena oil spill. Tim Short, a beach section supervisor, explains what the rescue effort looks like. Graham and Short were interviewed by the World Wildlife Fund.
